I started writing this song in 2007, then added to it around the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's death in 2008. He died after being shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, as you likely know. "Down South" has passed through many changes, beginning as a song remembering a time when Dusty Springfield's album, "Dusty In Memphis," was on my turntable a lot. It ended up pulling on more than that, about visiting Dealey Plaza in Dallas, about Emmett Till, about Deliverance, about visiting Montgomery, Alabama, about travelling through Louisiana and up Highway 61 through Mississippi en route to Memphis. It came out of seeing places and learning about people and events I'd only known through music, books, articles. You could say it started out as a kind of love song, really, but eventually gained in sadness, as my feelings and awareness snuck up on me. I recorded it as a quick demo one night at Billy Mazappa's apartment. Video footage showed Sergeant Mark Andrews dragging Pamela Somerville across the floor of Melksham Police Station, Wiltshire, before shoving her into the holding room. Ms Somerville, then 57, had been arrested after being found sleeping in her car and allegedly refusing a breathalyser test. She hit her head on the ground when she was thrown into the cell and sustained a gash above her eye.In the security footage from the 2008 attack, she appears to be momentarily knocked out before staggering to her feet. This is that waterfall that I like to vist & tape every once in a while. It's in the Ramapo Reservation in Mahwah NJ. Here are two scenes of it taken 9 months apart. The first is from December 2009 (done in black & white for the "Running Water and Dripping Snow" video shoot) and it's running pretty good. It's being fed by its stream with snowmelt. The next one is from early September 2010. It is almost BONE DRY! Nothing is flowing over the front and only a trickle is flowing down from my right side. This part of the US has had little rain this Summer and it shows! Now we did have major flooding back in March 2010 but I didn't go to the waterfall. I had a feeling that my usual vantage point would either be under water or constantly hit with water spray from a VERY active waterfall.
