"Shout" is a song by the British band Tears for Fears. Written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley and sung by Orzabal (with Curt Smith duetting on the chorus), it was the band's eighth single release (the second taken from their second LP Songs from the Big Chair) and sixth UK Top 40 hit, peaking at #4 in January 1985. In the USA, it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 3, 1985 and remained there for three weeks. "Shout" would become one of the most successful pop songs of 1985, eventually reaching the Top Ten in 25 countries. The promotional clip for "Shout", filmed in late 1984, was the second Tears for Fears clip directed by famed music video producer Nigel Dick. It features footage of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith at Durdle Door in Dorset, England, as well as a studio jam with the full band (including Ian Stanley and Manny Elias) performing the song amidst a crowd of family and friends. The video reportedly cost only £14000 to produce. Along with the clip for "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", the "Shout" video had a big hand in helping break Tears for Fears in America, due to its heavy airplay on music video pioneer MTV. Ironically, the band had at one time considered making a second video for the song's American single release, as the original was not considered MTV friendly.

"It's All in the Game" was a 1958 hit for Tommy Edwards. Carl Sigman composed the lyrics in 1951 to a wordless 1911 composition entitled "Melody in A Major," written by Charles Dawes, later Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. It is the only #1 pop single to have been cowritten by a US Vice President. Dawes, a Chicago bank president and amateur pianist and flautist, composed the tune in 1911 in a single sitting at his lakeshore home in Evanston. He played it for a friend, the violinist Francis MacMillen, who took Dawes's sheet music to a publisher. Dawes, known for his federal appointments and a United States Senate candidacy, was surprised to find a portrait of himself in a State Street shop window with copies of the tune for sale. Dawes quipped, "I know that I will be the target of my punster friends. They will say that if all the notes in my bank are as bad as my musical ones, they are not worth the paper they were written on." In summer 1951, the songwriter Carl Sigman had an idea for a song, and Dawes's "Melody" struck him as suitable for his sentimental lyrics. Dawes had died in April of that year. It was recorded that year by Dinah Shore, Sammy Kaye, Carmen Cavallaro, and Edwards. The Edwards version had most success, reaching #18 on the Billboard Best Sellers In Stores survey. Don't Make Me Over was Dionne's Warwick's first collaborative effort with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Warwick, whose real name is Marie Dionne Warrick, first met the team while singing background for The Drifters recording a Bacharach song entitled "Mexican Divorce". She then began demo recordings for the duo for songs like "Make It Easy On Yourself". As legend has it, Warwick originally thought "Make It Easy On Yourself" would be her debut as a solo artist and was angry when she learned Bacharach and David were giving the song to Jerry Butler. An upset Warwick balked, "don't make me over, man", which is street slang for "don't lie to me". The duo decided to make Warwick's epithet into a song for Warwick which she recorded at Bell Sound in Manhattan in August 1962. Released in November 1962, the recording of "Don't Make Me Over" was issued with a misspelling of the artist's name: Warwick, rather than Warrick. The singer decided to keep the misspelling and would be forever after known as Dionne Warwick. The song became Warwick's first hit single reaching #5 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles Chart, #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #17 on the CashBox Top 100 in January 1963 becoming the first of over 56 hit singles Warwick charted between 1962 and 1998, making her second only to Aretha Franklin as the most successful female vocalist of the Rock era.

Fatal disease strikes salmon farms as well as wild fish. A study of salmon fish farms in Norway and the UK has found that disease is reaching near epidemic proportions, with 417 farms reporting a disorder causing the destruction of heart and skeletal muscle tissue, which causes death in 20% of the fish. Furthermore, this infection can spread to wild fish. The team of US and Norwegian researchers, led by W. Ian Lipkin, MD, Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University in New York, USA further discovered that the cause of the affliction is likely a previously unknown virus. In the fish farms tested, 28 out of 29 samples were found to contain the newly identified virus, with some 25% of wild salmon tested that were also infected. Dr. Lipkin and colleagues, we appreciate your research highlighting this perils of farmed fish practices.
